Punta della Dogana Venice by boat
Continuing our Venetian Islands tour, we admire the Punta della Dogana, also known as Punta della Salute. This triangular area marks the division between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, overlooking the San Marco Basin.
The 17th-century Customs House building, also triangular, is crowned by a tower topped with the Golden Globe.
During the Republic of Venice, this strategic location served as a customs office for goods arriving via maritime trade.
This area of the city also includes the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, designed by Baldassare Longhena and built as a votive offering to the Virgin Mary by Venetians in gratitude for the end of the plague that ravaged the population between 1630 and 1631.
